Call of Duty® on Steam: Modern Warfare 4 Launch and PC Guide
Why Call of Duty® is climbing Steam's charts, how Modern Warfare 4 installs through the Call of Duty HQ app, PC specs, editions, and what arrives with Season 1.
If you are searching for “Call of Duty®” right now, the reason is almost certainly Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, which launches worldwide on October 23, 2026 and installs through the Call of Duty® app on Steam. Pre-order early access to the campaign (from October 16) and DMZ (from October 20) has already pushed the listing up Steam’s most-played charts, and the full launch is pushing it higher.
Below is what you actually need to know as a PC player: how the Steam app works, what hardware you need, which edition makes sense, and what is still coming. Details are as of October 2026 and may change with patches and seasonal updates.
What “Call of Duty®” on Steam actually is
The Steam entry named simply “Call of Duty®” is Call of Duty HQ, the shared launcher that has held the series’ mainline releases since Modern Warfare II (2022). Instead of each game being a separate install, HQ hosts modular content packs: campaign, multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone each download separately.
That matters for two reasons:
- Storage. You can install only the modes you play. Third-party guides put the full PC install at roughly 115-120 GB, and Activision’s PC specs list 115 GB of SSD space.
- Shared launcher quirks. Older titles you own (Modern Warfare III, Black Ops 7 and others) can sit in the same HQ install and take up drive space. HQ’s file management menu lets you choose which packs to keep.
How to install Modern Warfare 4 on Steam
Activision’s installation support page describes the official process:
- Open Steam and sign in with the account you used to buy Modern Warfare 4.
- Go to your Library and find Call of Duty (Call of Duty HQ).
- Select Install, then pick the Modern Warfare 4 content packs you want.
- Launch the game through HQ and choose the mode from its menu.
- To free space later, use the file management option in HQ to remove packs you no longer play.
The PC version is also sold through Battle.net and the Xbox PC app. Your purchase is tied to the store you bought it from, so install through that same launcher.
Modern Warfare 4 at a glance
Activision announced Modern Warfare 4 in May 2026. It is developed by Infinity Ward and released on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. Check the store page for your exact console before buying.
Early reception on Steam has been strong. GamesRadar reported that the campaign hit a Very Positive rating with 94% positive user reviews during early access, well ahead of Black Ops 7 and Modern Warfare III at the same stage. User scores tend to move once multiplayer is fully live, so treat that as an early snapshot.
Game Pass status
Modern Warfare 4 is not on Game Pass at launch. Activision said in mid-October that it launches as a standalone purchase and will join Game Pass in Holiday 2027, with no exact date confirmed. If you were holding off for a subscription, that is a long wait.
PC system requirements
Activision published three spec tiers on its PC tech blog, also summarized by DSOGaming.
| Tier | OS | CPU | RAM | GPU (examples) | VRAM |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | Windows 10 64-bit | Ryzen 5 1400 / Core i5-6600 | 8 GB | GTX 970, GTX 1060, RX 470, Arc A580 | 3 GB |
| Recommended | Windows 11 64-bit | Ryzen 5 3600 / Core i7-8700K | 16 GB | RTX 3060 Ti, RX 6600 XT, Arc B580 | 8 GB |
| Ray tracing / 4K | Windows 11 64-bit | Ryzen 7 3700X / Core i7-10700K | 32 GB | RTX 5070 Ti, RX 9070 XT | 16 GB |
Activision positions the Recommended tier around 90 FPS in multiplayer on high settings. The ray tracing tier targets 4K with upscaling.
One discrepancy worth knowing: the Steam listing has been reported to show an RTX 3060 for Recommended, while Activision’s own page says RTX 3060 Ti. If you are buying a graphics card specifically for this game, go by Activision’s page.
The requirements that trip people up
Raw performance is rarely the problem. These are:
- TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot. Both are required, as with the previous Call of Duty. Reports say PCs missing either are blocked from online modes. Most modern motherboards support both, but they are often switched off in the firmware (BIOS/UEFI) by default.
- AVX support. Only Intel and AMD CPUs with the AVX instruction set are supported.
- Resizable BAR on Intel Arc. Arc cards need Resizable BAR enabled.
- SSD storage. The 115 GB requirement is listed as SSD, not hard drive.
If you are planning an upgrade, the Recommended tier is the sensible target for most players. An 8 GB card in the RTX 3060 Ti / RX 6600 XT class, 16 GB of RAM and a fast SSD with room to spare will cover high-settings multiplayer.
Editions and pricing
According to the Xbox store listing and launch coverage, as of October 2026:
| Edition | US price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | $69.99 | Base game; digital pre-orders included campaign early access |
| Vault (digital only) | $99.99 | Base game plus operator packs, a signature weapon collection, one season of BlackCell and a DMZ deployment bonus |
Standard owners can reportedly upgrade to Vault for $30. Prices vary by region and store, and sales can change them, so check your storefront.
Our take: the Vault Edition’s extras are cosmetic and convenience items plus one season of the premium battle pass. If you would buy BlackCell anyway, the math is closer. If you only want the game, Standard gets you everything that affects play.
Launch issues and where to check status
As with every Call of Duty launch, there are early bugs. Activision keeps an official known-issues page, and Infinity Ward posts status updates through its official Trello board and the @CODUpdates account. Third-party reports from launch week mention:
- Players using the Xbox PC app having trouble launching Campaign or DMZ, with Activision investigating.
- “Connecting to online services” errors around launch.
- Online modes being blocked on PCs without TPM 2.0 or Secure Boot enabled.
Before troubleshooting yourself, check the official channels. Server-side issues during launch week often resolve without any action on your part. Only use official fixes and settings. Third-party “fix” downloads or tools that touch game files can get your account flagged by anti-cheat.
What’s coming next: Season 1 and Warzone
Activision’s announcement says Season 1 arrives “shortly after” launch, and that Warzone will integrate Modern Warfare 4 content and seasonal progression starting with Season 1. Several outlets report a Season 1 date of November 6, 2026. Not every source agrees, so treat that as likely and confirm it on the official Call of Duty blog.
A few practical points:
- Warzone right now is the current live version. If you select Warzone in HQ before Season 1, you install today’s Warzone, not the MW4-integrated one.
- New maps are rolling out. Reporting on Infinity Ward’s roadmap puts the fan-favorite Shipment map in the post-launch window. GameRant cites October 27, while at least one outlet ties it to Season 1. Check the official roadmap.
- Warzone on last-gen is winding down. Reports say Warzone on PS4 and Xbox One ends with this cycle, so players on those consoles should read Activision’s official notice.
The short version
- “Call of Duty®” on Steam is the Call of Duty HQ launcher. Modern Warfare 4 installs inside it as content packs.
- MW4 launches October 23, 2026, at $69.99 (Standard) or $99.99 (Vault) in the US, and it is not on Game Pass until Holiday 2027.
- On PC, check TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, AVX and 115 GB of SSD space before you worry about your GPU.
- Season 1 and Warzone integration come next, likely in early November.
