Over the Hill: Price, PC Specs, Co-op and What to Know at Launch
Over the Hill is the new co-op off-roader from the Art of Rally team. Learn the launch price, reported PC specs, co-op setup and console plans as of October 2026.
Over the Hill (officially styled “over the hill”) is the co-op off-road exploration game that just launched on Steam on October 14, 2026, which is why it shot to the top of the Steam best-seller chart. It comes from Funselektor, the studio behind Art of Rally and Absolute Drift, working with Strelka Games, and it lets you explore large wilderness regions in vintage 4x4s, alone or with up to three friends.
Below is what’s confirmed about the game, what it costs, what kind of PC you need, and where the information is still shaky. Details are current as of October 2026 and may change with patches or store updates.
What kind of game is Over the Hill?
Over the Hill is not a racing game in the Art of Rally sense. It’s a slower, exploration-focused off-roader. According to the Game Developer press release and Gematsu’s launch-date report, you head out into a large open wilderness and pick your way across it in vehicles modelled on classic 4x4 overlanders from the 1960s through the 1980s.
The core loop is about getting through terrain rather than beating a clock:
- Recovery tools such as planks to bridge gaps, a winch and a grappling hook are central to getting unstuck.
- Free-roam biomes with dynamic weather change how a route plays.
- Stuck vehicles are scattered around regions, giving you a reason to go back with a winch and help.
- Co-op recovery: the developers have talked about multi-winch setups, so players can chain cars together or pull each other out in creative ways.
OverTake’s reveal coverage describes it as players working together to overcome obstacles using planks, winches and other equipment, which is a good summary of the tone.
Regions at launch
Launch coverage says the release build includes regions based on Canada and Algeria. The Algeria-inspired region was revealed earlier in 2026 alongside a playtest. Only one launch report spelled out the full region list, so treat it as likely rather than fully confirmed until you see it in-game or on the Steam page.
Why it’s trending
The game arrived with a lot of momentum. The press release and GamingOnLinux report:
- More than 1.2 million wishlists on Steam before launch.
- More than 500,000 players tried the earlier Steam demo.
A studio with a well-liked previous game, a big demo audience and a low price is a classic recipe for a launch-day chart spike, which matches what we’re seeing on Steam right now.
Price, launch discount and editions
Happy Gamer’s launch report gives the following pricing. Store prices change, so check the Steam page for your region.
| Item | Reported price (USD) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| over the hill (base game) | $24.99 | €24.99 / £22.49 per the developers |
| Base game with launch discount | $19.99 | 20% off, reported to run until around October 28 |
| Soundtrack | $9.99 | Sold separately |
| Supporter Pack | $9.99 | Sold separately |
| Game + Soundtrack + Supporter Pack bundle | $37.99 |
The same report says bundling Over the Hill with certain other off-road and driving games on Steam (Snowrunner, Pacific Drive, Dredge or Cairn were named) gives an extra 10% off. Bundle offers on Steam come and go, so verify what’s live before relying on it.
The Supporter Pack and soundtrack are optional. Nothing in our sources suggests they change gameplay, so the base game is all you need to play with friends.
PC requirements: what’s reported so far
This is where you should be a little careful. We could not find an officially published recommended spec tier, and the minimum specs vary slightly between third-party listings. Here’s what multiple sources agree on, and where they don’t:
| Component | Reported minimum | Agreement between sources |
|---|---|---|
| OS | Windows 10 (64-bit) | Consistent |
| CPU | Intel Core i5-7400 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600 | Consistent |
| RAM | 8 GB | Consistent |
| GPU (Nvidia) | GeForce GTX 1070 | Consistent |
| GPU (AMD) | Listed as Radeon RX 5600, RX Vega 56 or Vega 10 depending on source | Inconsistent |
| DirectX | Version 11 | Reported in launch coverage |
| Storage | 2 GB or 4 GB depending on source | Inconsistent |
| Recommended specs | Not published in sources we checked | Unknown |
What this means for your hardware
A GTX 1070 and an i5-7400 are hardware from around 2016-2017, so the bar is modest. If your PC has a GPU at or above GTX 1070 level, a six-core Ryzen or a recent Intel quad-core, and 8 GB or more of RAM, you’re in the reported minimum range.
Because there’s no official recommended tier in what we found, we can’t tell you what’s needed for high settings or high frame rates. If you’re near the minimum:
- Open the Steam store page and scroll to System Requirements to see the current official list.
- Compare your GPU and CPU against it (in Windows, Task Manager > Performance shows both).
- If you’re unsure, read Steam’s official refund policy before buying so you know your options if performance disappoints.
- Start with default settings, then adjust resolution and quality if frame rates are low.
Linux and Steam Deck
The picture here is unclear. A developer comment from early 2025, reported by GamingOnLinux, said a native Linux version was not planned for release day but that the team wanted the game to run smoothly through Proton. One later launch-week summary says the Steam page lists Linux, which we couldn’t independently confirm. We also found no official Steam Deck Verified rating at the time of writing. Check the compatibility section on the Steam page before buying for a Deck.
Platforms and console release
| Platform | Status as of October 2026 |
|---|---|
| PC (Steam) | Out now, launched October 14, 2026 |
| PlayStation 5 | Announced for 2027 |
| Xbox Series X|S | Announced for 2027 |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | Announced for 2027 |
Per Gematsu, no specific console date has been given. If you mostly play on console, there’s no need to rush; the PC launch will tell you a lot about how the game plays before the console versions arrive.
How to start a co-op session
Over the Hill supports solo play and online co-op for up to four players. The basic steps through official channels:
- Each player buys the game on Steam. Our sources don’t mention a “friend pass” or free guest access, so assume everyone needs their own copy.
- Add each other as friends on Steam.
- One player hosts a session in-game and invites the others. Check the in-game menus for the exact invite option, as our sources don’t describe it.
- Agree on a region before you head out. Recovery is much easier when someone has a winch ready.
Menu names can differ from what’s described here, and the developers may add features after launch. Cross-play with the 2027 console versions has not been confirmed in the sources we used.
Should you pick it up now?
If you enjoyed the relaxed, scenic side of Art of Rally, or games built around getting a vehicle through hard terrain, Over the Hill looks like a strong fit, and the launch discount makes it cheap to try. The low reported minimum specs mean most gaming PCs from the last several years should be fine.
The open questions are the missing recommended specs, the conflicting AMD GPU and storage figures, and the unconfirmed Steam Deck status. Check the official Steam page for those before you buy, and keep Steam’s refund policy in mind if you’re on older hardware.
