How to Protect 8-Ball in GTA 3: Bomb Da Base Act II Guide
Learn how to protect 8-Ball in GTA 3's Bomb Da Base Act II: where to snipe from, which Cartel guards to shoot first, and how to avoid the common mission fails.
To protect 8-Ball in GTA 3, you clear the Colombian Cartel guards around the freighter in Portland Harbor with the sniper rifle he gives you during Bomb Da Base: Act II, shooting from a rooftop before the guards ever see you. Kill the guards closest to 8-Ball’s path first, working left to right from the ship’s ramp, and he will walk in, plant the explosives and finish the mission for you.
That is the short version. Below is the full setup, the best sniping position, the shooting order the major guides agree on, and the mistakes that most often get 8-Ball killed. This applies to the original GTA III and, with small differences noted, the Definitive Edition. Details are based on community guides and wikis as of October 2026.
What the mission is and how to start it
Bomb Da Base comes in two parts. Act I is given by Salvatore Leone: he wants the Cartel’s freighter in Portland Harbor destroyed because it is being used to produce SPANK, and he sends you to 8-Ball for explosives. According to GTABase, Act I is essentially a short cutscene. Act II starts at 8-Ball’s bomb shop in Harwood.
The catch is money. 8-Ball wants $100,000 before Act II starts, and he will tell you to come back once you have it. If you are short, the guides suggest side jobs such as Taxi Driver, Vigilante or Firefighter missions to build up the cash.
Will you lose the $100,000 if you fail?
This is where sources disagree. StrategyWiki says the money is refunded on failure on PS2 and Xbox, but not on the PC GTA III and Liberty City ports. Other guides simply say you lose the money and must pay again. The safe assumption is to have a buffer beyond $100,000 so a failed attempt does not lock you out for a while.
Why protecting 8-Ball is hard
Three things make this mission a noticeable difficulty spike:
- 8-Ball cannot fight. His hands are still injured, which is why he gives you the rifle. He is entirely dependent on you.
- The guards hit hard. The Cartel members carry assault rifles (M16s in the original release; the mobile and Definitive Edition versions use AK-47s, per the Atrocious Gameplay wiki). They can kill 8-Ball very quickly once he is exposed.
- The sniper controls are awkward. Multiple guides call the aiming overly sensitive, especially on console. Shooting 8-Ball yourself also fails the mission.
The GTA Guide walkthrough lists the two fail conditions plainly: 8-Ball dies, or the guards are alerted too early.
Step-by-step: how to protect 8-Ball
- Pay 8-Ball and pick him up. Once you have $100,000, start Act II at his shop. He joins you and supplies the sniper rifle.
- Practice the rifle first if you need to. GTABase suggests getting a feel for the zoom and aim on pedestrians before the real shots. Just keep the crosshair well away from 8-Ball.
- Drive to the marked stopping point near the harbor. Do not drive up to the ship. Getting close to the Colombians, or shooting at them before you are in position, alerts them and can fail the mission instantly.
- Go around the back of the nearby building. StrategyWiki advises going around the right-hand side at the back, because if you go around the front the guards will spot you.
- Climb the stairs to the roof. GTABase describes the roof as reached by a staircase on the south-east side of the building. StrategyWiki adds a useful detail: you can stop at the top of the first stairwell, because that spot is actually closer to your targets.
- Zoom all the way in and hold it. StrategyWiki recommends zooming fully and keeping the zoom button held throughout, rather than zooming in and out between shots.
- Clear the guards in order. Start with the guards nearest the ramp and 8-Ball’s path, then work left to right across the ship (see the next section).
- Let 8-Ball do his job. Once every guard is dead, 8-Ball goes aboard, plants the explosives and the ship goes up, which completes the mission.
Which guards to shoot first
The guides frame the shooting order slightly differently, but they point the same way:
| Source | Recommended order |
|---|---|
| StrategyWiki | Shoot the leftmost guard beside the Crusher first, then the other guard next to him |
| GTABase | Scout the ship first, then shoot from left to right, starting from the ramp |
| GamerGuides | Take out the enemies closest to 8-Ball first; aiming at guards further back gets him killed |
| GTAForums | Begin with the two Colombians at the ship’s entrance |
The logic is simple: the guards near the ramp and entrance are the ones who will have a line of sight on 8-Ball first. Removing them before anyone further back reacts gives him a clear path. Before you take your first shot, spend a few seconds scanning the deck through the scope so you know where everyone is standing.
Tips for cleaner shots
- Take your time on the first shot. You are unseen until you start firing, so line up the opening kill carefully.
- Watch 8-Ball’s health. If he starts moving while guards are still up, prioritize whoever is shooting at him over anyone else.
- Definitive Edition slow motion. GamerGuides suggests using an adrenaline pill in the Definitive Edition to slow things down while aiming, if you have one.
Alternative approaches (and their risks)
Some players clear the deck in other ways. On GTAForums, players describe using rockets, and one player mentions using a Cartel Cruiser on the deck; a GameFAQs answer suggests an Uzi. These are player-reported tactics, not the route the mission is designed around, and they put you much closer to the guards. Getting close is exactly what alerts them, so the rooftop sniper approach remains the most reliable way to keep 8-Ball alive.
One odd detail from the GTA Wiki: if you happen to be on the ship when it explodes, you do not die but reappear on land.
Reward and what comes next
StrategyWiki and the GTA Wiki list a $150,000 reward, which more than covers the $100,000 fee, and say completing the mission unlocks Salvatore’s mission Last Requests. Note that some wiki pages list no cash reward for this mission, so the exact payout may depend on the version and which source you trust.
If you keep failing
- Restart from the marker. After a fail, you can step back into the mission marker to try again, but check whether your version charges you the $100,000 a second time.
- Re-check your approach route. Most early fails come from being spotted. Park at the stopping point, go around the back and stay off the front side of the building.
- Use the closer stairwell spot. Standing at the top of the first stairwell, as StrategyWiki suggests, shortens the distance and makes the awkward rifle a little easier to manage.
Get the first two guards near the ramp cleanly and the rest of the mission usually falls into place.

Frequently asked questions
Why does Bomb Da Base Act II fail as soon as I get near the ship? +
The Cartel guards are alerted if you get close or attack them before reaching a proper vantage point. Guides list the guards being alerted too early as a fail condition, so approach from the back of the nearby building and shoot only from the roof.
Do I get my $100,000 back if I fail the mission? +
Sources disagree. StrategyWiki says the money is refunded on the PS2 and Xbox versions but not on the PC ports, while other guides say you lose it and have to pay again, so plan as if you will need the cash a second time.
Can I use a different weapon than the sniper rifle? +
8-Ball hands you a sniper rifle and the guides are built around it. Some players report clearing the guards other ways, such as with an Uzi or rockets, but that is player advice rather than the intended route and is riskier because the guards target 8-Ball quickly.
What do I get for finishing Bomb Da Base Act II? +
StrategyWiki and the GTA Wiki list a $150,000 reward and say the mission unlocks Salvatore's mission Last Requests. Some wiki pages list no cash reward, so treat the exact payout as unconfirmed for your version.
