Retro Bowl Guide: Versions, Price, Unlock and Apple Arcade (2026)
What Retro Bowl is, which version to download, what the $0.99 Unlimited unlock adds, how Coaching Credits work, and how it differs from the Apple Arcade editions.
Retro Bowl is a free, 8-bit-style American football game from UK studio New Star Games (the team behind New Star Soccer) for iPhone, iPad, Android and Nintendo Switch, with an optional $0.99 unlock on the App Store. You play the offense yourself in arcade-style drives and run the franchise around it: roster, contracts, facilities and team morale.
It is back in the App Store’s top charts this week, so below is what the game is, which version makes sense for you, what you get for free versus paid, and how it relates to the newer Apple Arcade spin-offs. Details are accurate as of October 2026; prices and features can change with updates.
What Retro Bowl actually is
New Star Games released Retro Bowl on iOS and Android on 17 January 2020. Creator Simon Read said the idea came from revisiting the Tecmo football games of the 80s and 90s, and Wikipedia describes the game as heavily influenced by the Tecmo Bowl series. Its popularity grew later in 2020, helped by YouTube creators covering it.
The game has two halves:
- On the field: you control your offense on each drive, throwing to receivers and running the ball. Defense plays out more automatically, so the game stays quick and easy to pick up.
- Off the field: you are head coach and general manager. You sign and release players, manage the salary cap, keep morale up and spend Coaching Credits on upgrades.
That mix of short, simple matches and light management is the reason it has stayed popular on phones for years.
Every version of Retro Bowl, compared
There are now several Retro Bowl games, which is confusing if you just searched the name. Here is how they line up based on the developer’s announcements and press coverage.
| Version | Platforms | How you pay | Key difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Retro Bowl | iOS, Android | Free, optional $0.99 Unlimited unlock and Coaching Credit packs | The original game |
| Retro Bowl (Switch) | Nintendo Switch | $4.99 / £4.49 / €4.99 at launch | Paid console port, released February 10, 2022 |
| Retro Bowl (browser) | Poki, Kongregate | Free | Official web version, per Wikipedia |
| Retro Bowl+ | Apple Arcade | Arcade subscription | No ads or in-app purchases |
| Retro Bowl College / College+ | iOS, Android / Apple Arcade | Free with IAP / Arcade subscription | College football spin-off |
| NFL Retro Bowl ‘27 | Apple Arcade | Arcade subscription | Officially licensed NFL teams and players |
A few notes on that table:
- The Switch price comes from New Star Games’ Switch launch announcement in 2022. Check the Nintendo eShop for today’s regional price.
- When Retro Bowl College+ arrived on Apple Arcade on August 6, 2026, the developer said that every game in the Retro Bowl series was available on Apple Arcade for the first time.
- If you see sites offering “unblocked” or modified copies, skip them. The official sources are the App Store, Google Play, the Nintendo eShop, Apple Arcade and the browser portals listed above.
Free vs. Unlimited: what the $0.99 unlock adds
The mobile game is free, and one review noted it has no ads. The main paid option is a one-time Unlimited Version unlock, listed at $0.99 on the US App Store. Prices differ by region (the Italian store, for example, lists €0.99).
According to reviews and reference sources, the Unlimited Version unlocks:
- The team and uniform editor, so you can change team names, colors and logos
- Weather effects
- A 12-man roster option
- Difficulty settings
Later updates have added features such as game simulation and Exhibition Mode. The sources I checked don’t agree on which of those depend on the unlock, so check the in-game store before you buy if a specific feature matters to you.
Coaching Credits
Coaching Credits are the game’s currency. You earn them through play, and the App Store also sells packs, ranging from about $0.99 to $29.99 in the US store. Reviewers generally say you can earn enough by playing that buying them isn’t necessary. Credits are only sold through the official in-game store. Any site promising free credits or “unlimited money” is a scam or a modified app that can put your device and account at risk.
How the franchise side works
New Star Games doesn’t publish a detailed manual, so the specifics below come from reviews and player guides. Treat exact numbers as approximate, and use the in-game tutorial and screens as the final word.
Facilities
You spend Coaching Credits to upgrade facilities. Player guides describe:
- Training facilities: help players gain XP and improve faster.
- Rehab facilities: shorten recovery time from injuries.
- Stadium: affects fan happiness, and guides say more fans tends to mean more credits.
Morale
Each player has a morale rating, and the team has one too. Guides describe a scale running from “Toxic” at the bottom to “Exceptional” at the top. One unhappy star can hurt the whole locker room, so it is worth paying attention when a player’s mood drops. Credits can also be spent to lift morale.
Salary cap and contracts
You have to keep the roster under a salary cap. It matters more once your team is good and your stars want new deals. Cheap rookie contracts help a lot, and so does letting declining veterans go before their wages eat your budget. Guides disagree on some of the exact figures, so check the numbers on your own roster screen.
Getting started: a sensible first season
- Download the official version for your device from the App Store, Google Play or the Nintendo eShop, or play Retro Bowl+ if you already subscribe to Apple Arcade.
- Play through the tutorial drive. It teaches the controls, and the inputs differ slightly between touchscreens and Switch controllers.
- Pick a team and take a look at your roster before your first game. Note who your best quarterback and receivers are.
- Spend your first credits on facilities rather than on short-term fixes. Faster XP gains and quicker injury recovery pay off across many seasons.
- Watch morale after every game, especially for your best players.
- Plan for the salary cap a season ahead so a big contract demand doesn’t catch you out.
- Decide on the $0.99 unlock once you know you enjoy the game. It is a one-time purchase, not a subscription.
Retro Bowl vs. NFL Retro Bowl ‘27
If you want real NFL teams, the original Retro Bowl won’t give you that. Its teams are unlicensed, which is why the team editor is so popular. Officially licensed NFL and NFLPA teams and players are in the separate NFL Retro Bowl series on Apple Arcade.
The newest entry, NFL Retro Bowl ‘27, was announced in July 2026 for a September 3 launch on Apple Arcade. Its headline addition is Gauntlet Mode. Pre-launch coverage describes it as a run where you start with limited resources, try to survive a 15-game win streak and compete for a high score. You can choose safer or tougher opponents, with bigger rewards for harder wins, and some progress, such as player XP and abilities, carries over after a loss. That coverage was written before release, so the final game may differ in detail.
Which one should you play?
- You want the classic and don’t subscribe to anything: get the free Retro Bowl on iOS or Android and consider the $0.99 unlock.
- You already pay for Apple Arcade: Retro Bowl+ gives you the same game with no ads or in-app purchases, and NFL Retro Bowl ‘27 adds real teams.
- You prefer playing on a TV: the Switch version is a one-time purchase. Reviewers praised its controller support.
- You like college football: Retro Bowl College is the spin-off to try, and Retro Bowl College+ is the Apple Arcade version.
