Planet Zoo 2 is Frontier Developments’ sequel to its 2019 zoo management sim, and it launches today, Tuesday, October 13, 2026, on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S at 3 PM BST. The Standard Edition costs $49.99 and the Deluxe Edition $64.99, and the headline additions are aquariums, aviaries and buildable Wildlife Reserves where you can release animals into the wild.

Below is what you need to know before you buy or hit download, including PC hardware requirements and how it handles on Steam Deck. All details are as of October 13, 2026 and may change with launch-day patches.

Planet Zoo 2 release time and pre-load

According to GamingBolt, Frontier set the global unlock for 3 PM BST (14:00 UTC) on October 13, 2026, and published a time-zone conversion guide for other regions.

Steam pre-loading for pre-order customers was targeted for 3 PM BST on October 12, exactly 24 hours before launch. Frontier called that a goal rather than a fixed promise, so if your download did not appear on time, that is why.

One smaller outlet reported an earlier PC date of October 10, but it conceded the detail was unconfirmed, and it conflicts with Frontier’s own announcement. Treat October 13 as the real date.

Editions and pre-order bonus

Two editions were announced in May 2026, per Gematsu:

  • Standard Edition – $49.99. The base game.
  • Deluxe Edition – $64.99 / £54.99. Adds the Deluxe Upgrade Pack with six extra animal species (reported examples include the Golden Eagle, Axolotl and Longfin Batfish) plus exclusive animal signs.

Pre-orders came with a Bonus Content Pack: a Toucan Eat food shop and matching signage, three unique animal donation bins and a Tiger photo stand-in wall.

A note on euro pricing: one announcement listing gives the Deluxe Edition at €49.99, the same as the Standard Edition, which looks like an error. Check the store page in your region for the actual price.

On PlayStation Store, owners of the original Planet Zoo there were offered 10% off the Deluxe pre-order. We found no confirmed equivalent on Steam or Xbox.

What’s new in Planet Zoo 2

Aquariums and aquatic animals

For the first time, you can keep fully aquatic species. Coverage from CGMagazine and others describes freshwater and saltwater habitats, including larger animals such as sea turtles and sunfish. Running them means managing filtration systems and diving teams on top of the usual habitat care.

Aviaries and flying animals

Birds now fly freely inside custom aviaries. You build them from barriers, support poles and dynamic mesh covers, so their shape is up to you.

Wildlife Reserves and conservation

Conservation is the main theme of the sequel. You can join global conservation projects, release animals into Wildlife Reserves you design yourself, and earn research benefits that feed back into your zoo. The gameplay trailer featured a Scottish Highland Wildlife Reserve.

Animal behaviour and building tools

Previews mention a “Dynamic Needs” system, where animals behave according to their current mood, along with thousands of scenery pieces, blueprints and an expanded terrain editor. Frontier had not detailed every management system before launch, so expect more to surface now that players have the full game.

Game modes

The official Planet Zoo 2 site lists three modes:

  1. Career – You start as the new Conservation Coordinator at FEN and improve zoos around the world. This is the main single-player campaign and the gentlest way to learn the tools.
  2. Sandbox – Free building of zoos and Wildlife Reserves, where you choose how much simulation and challenge you want.
  3. Franchise – A shared, online network of zoos and reserves with common progression and research, plus animal trading between players and community conservation goals.

The original game had a separate Challenge mode. We found no confirmation that Planet Zoo 2 includes one at launch.

PC system requirements

This is where Planet Zoo 2 differs most from its predecessor: it is a much heavier game. We could not access Frontier’s spec sheet directly, so the figures below come from aggregators such as System Requirements Lab, which broadly agree with each other.

ComponentMinimumRecommended
CPUIntel i7-8700K / AMD Ryzen 5 3600Intel i7-10700K / AMD Ryzen 7 5800X
GPURTX 2060 (6GB) / RX 5600 XT (6GB) / Arc A750RTX 3070 (8GB) / RX 6700 XT (12GB) / Arc A770
RAM16 GB16 GB
Storage40 GB40 GB (SSD reported as required)

Sources disagree on two points:

  • Operating system. Some listings show Windows 10 or 11 for the minimum spec, others Windows 11 only. If you are still on Windows 10, check the Steam store page before buying.
  • Intel Arc VRAM. One site lists different VRAM amounts for the Arc cards than the others.

What this means for your rig

  1. Check your GPU first. An RTX 2060-class card is the floor. A third-party estimate puts that card at around 40 FPS at 1080p Ultra, so plan on lowering settings.
  2. Install on an SSD. At least one listing marks an SSD as required, and big zoo saves load faster on one anyway.
  3. Do not skimp on CPU. Zoo sims run a lot of guest and animal simulation on the processor, and the listed CPUs are a clear step up from what the first game needed.
  4. Have 40 GB free before the download starts.

Steam Deck performance

SteamDeckHQ reports that Valve rated Planet Zoo 2 Steam Deck Verified about a month before launch. Valve’s checks found that the default controller layout and graphics settings work, the correct controller icons show, and in-game text is legible. The original Planet Zoo was only rated Playable.

Keep your expectations in check, though. The PC minimum specs are well above the Deck’s hardware, and Verified status is about compatibility rather than frame rate. You need an internet connection for initial setup, after which the game is expected to work offline.

Is it worth buying on day one?

As of launch day we have not found full critical reviews, only hands-on previews. Insider Gaming’s preview was very enthusiastic, and But Why Tho? tried the Career and Sandbox modes without giving a final verdict. Neither is a substitute for a full review.

If you are on the fence, wait a few days for reviews on OpenCritic or Metacritic and early Steam user reviews, especially to see how it performs on hardware near the minimum spec. If you already loved the first game and your PC clears the recommended spec, the aquarium, aviary and reserve features give you plenty of new things to build.

Frequently asked questions

What time does Planet Zoo 2 unlock? +

Frontier set the launch for 3 PM BST on October 13, 2026, which is 14:00 UTC. Steam pre-orders were targeted to pre-load 24 hours earlier, though Frontier described that pre-load timing as a goal rather than a guarantee.

Is Planet Zoo 2 on PS5 and Xbox at launch? +

Yes. Planet Zoo 2 releases on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on the same day. The first Planet Zoo launched on PC first and reached consoles later, so this is a change from the original.

Does Planet Zoo 2 run on Steam Deck? +

Valve has rated Planet Zoo 2 as Steam Deck Verified, with its default controller layout and graphics settings passing Valve's checks. Coverage notes the PC minimum specs are well above the Deck's hardware, so expect to keep settings modest.

According to the Steam Deck compatibility notes, an internet connection is required for initial setup, after which the game is expected to work offline. The Franchise mode is built around online features such as trading animals with other players.

Is there a discount for owners of the original Planet Zoo? +

On PlayStation Store, players who bought Planet Zoo there were offered 10% off the Deluxe Edition pre-order price. We did not find a confirmed equivalent loyalty discount on other platforms, so check your store before buying.
