How to Unlock Games on Roblox: Age Checks and Parental Controls
Why some Roblox games show as locked, and the official ways to unlock them: completing an age check, account types, maturity labels and parental controls.
To unlock a Roblox game that shows as locked or unplayable, you usually need to complete Roblox’s age check (a selfie-based Facial Age Estimation or a government ID scan) in Settings > Account info, or, if you’re under 16, have a linked parent account adjust or approve your content settings. Since Roblox’s age-based accounts went global in June 2026, which games you can join depends on your verified age group and each game’s content maturity label.
This guide explains why games get locked, which official switches control access, and what to do when the result looks wrong. Everything here is based on Roblox’s own announcements and support pages as of November 2026; Roblox has changed these rules several times in the past year, so menu names and age thresholds may shift again.
Why games are locked on Roblox
There are three main reasons a game (Roblox calls them “experiences”) won’t let you in:
- You haven’t completed an age check. Roblox has required age checks for chat since early 2026, and according to its June 2026 announcement, users who haven’t done one are placed into a Kids or Select account based on their self-declared birthday, without chat or the full Roblox experience.
- Your account type doesn’t cover the game’s maturity label. Every experience carries a content maturity label: Minimal, Mild, Moderate or Restricted. Your account only opens the labels that fit your age group.
- A parent has limited your access. A linked parent account can lower the content maturity level or block specific experiences.
Note that a locked game can still show up for you. Roblox’s Parental Controls Overview says experiences above your allowed level may still appear in search or ads, but they won’t be playable.
How account types and maturity labels fit together
Roblox announced on June 16, 2026 that age-based accounts were available worldwide, after a limited rollout in Australia, Indonesia, the Netherlands and New Zealand. Here’s how the tiers line up with maturity labels:
| Account type | Ages | Games you can join |
|---|---|---|
| Roblox Kids | 5-8 | Minimal and Mild |
| Roblox Select | 9-15 | Up to Moderate |
| Standard account | 16+ | Minimal, Mild and Moderate |
| Standard, age checked 18+ | 18+ | Also Restricted |
A few points worth knowing:
- You move up automatically. Per Roblox, accounts move from Kids to Select at age 9 and to a standard account at 16. There’s no separate “unlock” step for that beyond your age being on record.
- Restricted is its own gate. Roblox Support and a Roblox DevForum update say Restricted experiences are only for users who are 18 or older and age checked. Older guides mention a 17+ threshold; that has since been raised to 18+.
- Games for younger accounts get extra review. Roblox says games go through real-time evaluations, including reports from users 16 and older, before reaching younger accounts. A Mild game that isn’t showing up in a Kids account may simply not have been cleared for it yet.
- Unrated games are treated cautiously. Roblox’s creator documentation says experiences without content maturity information are treated as Moderate, which keeps them out of Kids accounts.
How to complete a Roblox age check
This is the step that unlocks the most for most players. Roblox Support’s article How does Roblox estimate my age? describes the path:
- Open Settings. On desktop, click the gear icon at the top right. On mobile, tap More (…) at the bottom right, then the gear icon.
- Go to Account info.
- Under Age Group, choose Continue with selfie to start Facial Age Estimation, or Continue with ID to scan a government ID such as a passport or driver’s license (ID verification is available for users 13 and older).
- Follow the on-screen prompts using your device’s camera. Good, even lighting helps; for ID scans, place the card flat on a plain surface.
- When it finishes, check Account info again to confirm your age group, then try the game.
Roblox says the facial estimation is handled through the Roblox app using your device camera, and that images and video are deleted after processing. News coverage reports that Roblox uses a third-party provider, Persona, for these checks.
Selfie or ID: which should you use?
| Method | Who can use it | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Facial Age Estimation (selfie) | Most users | Quick; gives an estimated age group. Can be reset from Account info. |
| Government ID | Users 13+ | Useful if the selfie estimate is wrong. Third-party guides say an ID verification can’t be undone the way a selfie result can. |
If a specific game still won’t let you in after a selfie check, check whether that experience expects ID verification. Some players report that a facial estimate alone doesn’t satisfy every requirement for older content; Roblox hasn’t published a single list of which experiences require which method, so treat this as unconfirmed.
What to do if your age group is wrong
Age estimates aren’t perfect. Roblox’s official fixes:
- 13 or older: go to Account info and choose Continue with ID to verify with a government ID.
- Previously checked by selfie: Roblox Support describes a Reset button underneath your birthday and age group that lets you redo the check.
- Under 13: a birthday can be changed with the pencil icon next to it, and a linked parent account can correct a child’s age group after an age check.
Don’t expect Support to override it for you: Roblox says its support team cannot manually verify an ID, remove an existing verification or change account settings on your behalf.
Unlocking games as a parent
If your child is under 16, many locks are controlled from your side. You need your own Roblox account linked to your child’s account to manage parental controls, according to Roblox Support.
- Sign in to your Roblox account and open Parental Controls (you’ll be prompted to link to your child’s account if you haven’t yet).
- Use the content maturity setting to choose the highest level your child can join, from Minimal up. Your child can only join experiences at or below that level.
- Check Content restrictions > Blocked experiences to see if a game was blocked. Blocking works regardless of maturity level, so remove it from the list if you want to allow it.
- For Kids and Select accounts, TechCrunch reported that parents can approve specific games outside the default restrictions.
Your settings can’t open more than your child’s account type allows: a Restricted game stays off-limits to anyone who isn’t an age-checked adult.
Other kinds of “locked” in Roblox
Sometimes “locked” means something else:
- Locked areas, items or levels inside a game are set by that game’s developer. You unlock them by playing, or through purchases the developer offers in that experience. Check the game’s description or official community for details.
- Roblox blocked on a school or work network is a decision by that network’s administrator. Ask them; don’t try to get around it.
Steer clear of any site, video or “script” promising to unlock games, skip age checks or hand out free Robux. These aren’t official, they break Roblox’s rules, and they’re a common way to lose an account. Roblox will never ask for your password to verify your age.
The short version
For most players, completing the age check in Settings > Account info is what unlocks locked games. After that, your age group and each game’s maturity label decide what you can join, with Restricted reserved for age-checked adults. If you’re under 16, a linked parent account is the official way to adjust what’s allowed. Roblox is still adjusting this system, so check its age check announcements and help pages if a menu doesn’t match what’s described here.

Frequently asked questions
Why can I see a Roblox game in search but not join it? +
Roblox can still show experiences above your allowed maturity level in search results or ads, but they won't be playable. Your account type, age check status or a parent's content maturity setting is usually the reason.
Does completing an age check unlock every game on Roblox? +
No. An age check places you in an age group, and you can only join experiences whose maturity label fits that group. Restricted experiences additionally require you to be 18 or older and age checked, and some players report that a specific experience may expect ID verification rather than a selfie estimate.
My age check put me in the wrong age group. What can I do? +
Roblox Support says users 13 and older can choose Continue with ID under Account info to verify with a government ID instead. Parents with a linked parent account can also correct their child's age group after an age check if they believe it is wrong.
Can Roblox Support unlock a game or verify my age for me? +
No. Roblox says its support team cannot manually verify an ID, remove an existing verification or change account settings on your behalf, so the age check has to be completed in the app.
Can a parent let a child play a specific game outside their default restrictions? +
According to TechCrunch's coverage of the Kids and Select launch, parents can approve specific games outside the default restrictions from a linked parent account. Parents can also block individual experiences regardless of their maturity label.
