Crimson Desert Enhanced: Charting the Unknown DLC Guide and Unlocks
What Crimson Desert Enhanced: Charting the Unknown adds, when it launched, what it costs, what you need to own, and how to unlock ships, diving and the new story.
Crimson Desert Enhanced: Charting the Unknown is the first paid expansion for Pearl Abyss’s open-world action game Crimson Desert, and it launched on October 29, 2026 for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. It costs $24.99 and adds ships, naval combat, diving and underwater ruins, new offshore islands, strongholds, an upgraded housing mode and new story content for Kliff, Oongka and Damiane.
That is why it has jumped into Steam’s top sellers and new releases this week. Below is what you actually get, what you need to own, and how to unlock each part, based on store listings and launch coverage as of October 30, 2026.
The name: “Enhanced” vs “Charting the Unknown”
The title is confusing, so it is worth untangling first.
- Crimson Desert Enhanced is the free 2.0 update for the base game, announced at Gamescom Opening Night Live in August 2026. According to tbreak and other coverage, it adds new story scenes, extra voice-over languages, new Kliff skills and a skill reset system, and it rolls in all earlier post-launch patches. Existing owners get it by updating their game.
- Charting the Unknown is the paid DLC built on top of that version. Stores sell it as “Crimson Desert Enhanced: Charting the Unknown” because it requires the Enhanced (2.0 or later) build of the base game.
So you do not buy “Enhanced” separately. If you own Crimson Desert, update it, then buy the DLC if you want the new content.

The timing comes from games.gg. The two-week delay was reported by Gamereactor and others. Pearl Abyss said it needed more time to make the expansion more polished and stable. You may still see the old October 15 date on some pages written before the delay.
The PlayStation Store listing showed a 10% pre-order discount for owners of Crimson Desert Enhanced or the Deluxe Edition. Whether that discount or the diving outfits are still offered after launch depends on the store, so check your platform’s page before you buy. Pearl Abyss’s own DLC page also noted that the expansion would not be on the Mac App Store at launch.
Download size
TwistedVoxel reported a download of about 17.7 GB for the content update (version 01.000.662). Your size may differ by platform and by whether your base game is already fully updated, so leave some extra free space.
What Charting the Unknown adds
Ships and naval combat
The main feature is the sea. You get a ship you can customize and fit with cannons, then sail beyond Pywel’s coast to new islands. Naval fights are a separate combat mode from Crimson Desert’s usual melee-focused battles.
Diving, underwater ruins and a shark mount
You can dive to explore underwater ruins. Launch coverage describes a shark mount for moving quickly underwater and underwater boss fights where you have to watch your oxygen supply as well as your health.
Strongholds and businesses
According to GamingBolt’s breakdown of the overview trailer, you can build strongholds on the new islands and turn them into seaports by assigning Greymanes to them. Strongholds you liberate in Pywel can also be turned into businesses.
Boss rush and upgraded housing
The trailer also showed a boss rush mode, including fights against members of the Antumbra Order. The housing system has been reworked so you can build and decorate a home.
New story content
The DLC adds story threads following Kliff, Oongka and Damiane, the game’s three playable characters.
How to start Charting the Unknown
Each part of the expansion has its own unlock condition. Guides published around launch, including PC Gamer’s, broadly agree on these steps, but they do not all use the same quest names. If something below doesn’t match what you see, check your Journal, since details can shift with patches.
- Update the base game. Make sure Crimson Desert is on the Enhanced build (2.0 or later), then buy and install the DLC from the same store where you own the game.
- Try diving straight away. Diving reportedly has no prerequisite and is available as soon as the DLC is installed.
- Set up Greymane Camp at Howling Hill. This is the key gate for most of the new systems. Several guides tie it to the “Howling Hill” part of the main story.
- Progress the Greymane faction quest “Grounds of the Sunrise.” Guides point to the “Gathered Will” questline, specifically the “Expanding the Camp” step, as what opens up ships.
- Get your ship. Once unlocked, you can either send comrades on a ship-building dispatch mission from a port or buy a ship from a Fleet Office manager.
- Unlock upgraded housing. With the camp set up, complete “Luke’s Request” in the same Greymane faction quest.
- Start the character stories. The new Kliff, Oongka and Damiane story content requires finishing the main story. You start it from the Journal menu.
Where sources disagree
Some guides say ocean exploration opens right after the Howling Hill quest. Others say you need to finish the whole “Gathered Will” line first. Both agree that the Greymane camp at Howling Hill comes first, so if you aren’t there yet, push the main story and Greymane quests forward before you buy the DLC expecting to sail on day one.
Is it worth buying now?
That depends on where you are in the game.
- Finished or late game: You can use nearly everything right away, including the new character stories. This is the best time to buy.
- Mid-game, past Howling Hill: Ships, strongholds and housing should be available soon, but the story content is still locked behind the ending.
- Early game: Apart from diving, most of the DLC stays locked for a while. Updating to Enhanced is free, so there’s no rush to buy the expansion.
Reviews and player impressions are still coming in, since the expansion only unlocked on October 29. Watch for early patches. Pearl Abyss delayed the expansion for stability, but new content can still ship with bugs.
Quick checklist before you buy
- Confirm your base game is updated to Crimson Desert Enhanced.
- Check the price and any owner discount on your own store page.
- Free up roughly 18 GB or more of storage.
- Know where you are in the story: diving works right away, ships need the Howling Hill camp, and the character stories need the main story finished.
- Buy from the official storefront for your platform (Steam, PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store) so the add-on links to the copy of the game you own.
All details here are accurate as of October 30, 2026 and may change with future patches or store updates.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to buy Crimson Desert Enhanced separately to play Charting the Unknown? +
No. Crimson Desert Enhanced is the free 2.0 update for the base game, so owners just need to update their copy. Charting the Unknown itself is a paid add-on that requires the base game on that Enhanced version.
How much does Charting the Unknown cost? +
It is listed at $24.99 on PlayStation Store, and the same price is reported for PC and Xbox. PlayStation listed a 10% pre-order discount for owners of Crimson Desert Enhanced or the Deluxe Edition; regional prices and promotions vary, so check your own store.
Can I go diving right after installing the DLC? +
Guides published around launch say diving has no story requirement and is usable once the DLC is installed. Ships, strongholds and the new character stories are gated behind specific quests.
Why did Charting the Unknown come out on October 29 instead of October 15? +
Pearl Abyss delayed the expansion by two weeks, saying it wanted extra time to make it more polished and stable. Some older store pages and articles still show the original October 15 date.
